Overview About ATM Identity Theft

Nowadays, so much focus is put on internet identity crimes. However, this is not the only way that thieves operate. They also use such tactics such as stealing identities via ATM info.

This is a process that takes place by way of what is called skimming. A further explanation of this phenomenon is shown below. This is not something that happens often but it does happen in some parts of the world.

The (Con) Art of Skimming

This is the acquisition of credit or debit card numbers and info via a hidden video or digital camera behind a fake ATM panel. This is very clever and crafty and takes more ingenious than the average person.

Who would have thought? This is a problem very prevalent in the UK right now. However, it could occur in other geographical. It could hit the United States, if it has not already.

This can be a very hard concept to explain by the average person to the average person. Perhaps the best way to explain it is to show you the components involved in a skimming operation, and signs of one.

Here is a list of the components of a skimming identity theft operation:

False Bank Machine-As mentioned above, a false front that looks like a real ATM machine is installed. One sign that there is a skimming operation taking place on an automated teller machine is that the original machine appears to have been pulled forward. This is because behind it is where the small photo taking or video equipment is installed.

Camera-This is the piece of equipment that is stored behind the false ATM front. It is used to capture vital credit card or debit card information. Basically what happens is that this device is used to capture your entire automated teller machine transaction. The skimming identity thieves even get your PIN, which is the number you use to access your bank account.

Magnetic card reader-This is installed into the false ATM panel, in the front. It works along with the camera to steal all your details that is available through your credit/debit account. This is one step towards the goal of a thief-to steal your money of course.

Combating this Problem

One measure that has been taken is that many ATM machines are not having cameras installed behind them. This helps capture any fraudulent skimming activity. This is done to help cut down on the cases of identity theft at automated bank/teller machines.
